THE FIRST CHAPTER

Aristides

First-ever winner

Aristides won the inaugural Kentucky Derby on May 17, 1875, ridden by Oliver Lewis. The first race covered 1½ miles.

  • He was originally meant to set a fast pace for stablemate Chesapeake—but became the winner himself.
  • His name honored breeder Aristides Welch, a friend of his owner.
  • Trainer Ansel Williamson and jockey Oliver Lewis were both Black horsemen whose achievements shaped the inaugural Derby.
